Tutoring and Mentoring

A Partnership with Family Promise & Temple Sinai’s 7th-12th Graders.  Open to all High School students-members of Sinai, not just those enrolled in the Hebrew High School.   Our very own 11th grade student Hayden Signer is organizing Middle/High School students to offer educational support to younger children through Family Promise. We need 8-10 volunteers and this is a great opportunity to engage in Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and give back to the community, while building connections with other Sinai High School students and younger students in need of educational support.  See attached slide deck for more information, and reach out to Hayden: hasinger2@gmail.com or Ian Singer, Sinai's Social Action Chair - isinger17@gmail.com - to learn more and get started!

Student Partner Alliance

Through a combination of private high school tuition assistance and mentoring support, the Student/Partner Alliance empowers high school students from Northern New Jersey’s urban areas to achieve success by attending strong academic and nurturing college preparatory high-schools.

Become a Mentor:

A Mentor provides mentoring support only for a matched student for 4 years at a college preparatory high school in the greater Newark/Jersey City area.

A Mentor is a trusted and experienced individual who wishes to provide coaching and advice to a student. No financial support is expected. Mentors are sometimes S/PA alumni who wish to give back by providing the guidance they were given as a S/PA student.

Individuals becoming Mentors will be provided with mentor training, mentor resources and support from the Student/Partner Alliance staff. Throughout the academic year events are held to bring Mentors together with their students in a group setting.

Events include:

  • Student/Partner/Mentor breakfasts or lunches at individual schools
  • A morning of service at the Community FoodBank of NJ (freshmen and sophomores) –– OR — – A “College Readiness” workshop (juniors and seniors) and respective Partners/Mentors
  • A Holiday Party for Partners/Mentors/Students and family members
  • A morning of service at Greater Newark Conservancy Urban Farm

Big Brothers Big Sisters

The Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest is excited to launch a new partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson and Union Counties.

This is a special opportunity for members of the Jewish community to impact the life of a young person living in a vulnerable family situation by volunteering to become an adult mentor. The idea for this partnership came from Federation’s anti racism task force, which began during the summer of 2020.

This program is co-sponsored by Federation’s Community Relations Committee (CRC) and Center for Volunteerism.

See details  here, including an invite to a virtual information session on Tuesday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m.
