CHANUKAH! DECEMBER 13, 2020

Our 15 fantastic Madrichim and 7 outstanding teachers planned and facilitated together wonderful Hanukkah experiences for our K-7 community, including Jack Lorber, Madrichim Coordinator and Karen Sacks, Song-leader. Take a look below at the shorthand version of all that took place in our Sunday Zoom Rooms to celebrate the miracle of the small Maccabean guerilla army’s Faith, and victory over Antiochus IV’s hundreds of trained soldiers, to regain our peoples’ right to carry on Jewish culture and tradition, and to worship once again in Jerusalem’s rededicated holy Temple.

Grade 2: Meet Letter Hey (a letter on the dreidel); Chanukah trivia “Jewpardy” Game; Chanukah music & singing; Morah Jessica Siegel & Madrichim Brandon Shaw & Seth Barish, with Karen Sacks, music

Grade 3: Chanukah Kahoots; Chanukah Bingo; Chanukah Menorah Craft; Chanukah music & singing; Morah Rachel Edelman & Madrichim Allie Cohen & Jessica Askins, with Karen Sacks, music

Grade 5: Teacher and Jewish Cartoonist-Storyteller Dov Smiley’s share of his Chanukah graphic story, soon to be published, highlighting friendship across cultures and political and cultural connections between ancient and modern times; Chanukah music & singing; Chanukah Kahoot, and a mini-presentation of the Chanukah story, with Morim Bracha Balser and Dov Smiley, and Madrichim Emma Timpone, Oren Weinstein & Hailey Schwind, with Karen Sacks, music

Grade 6: Meaningful Chanukah Card Craft—cards made expressly for someone who “Lights up my life;” Virtual Dreidel Game with friends; Chanukah Kahoot and special Chanukah videos, with Morim Rachel Edelman and Josh Rubin

Grade 7: While enjoying popcorn (made with oil) that was mailed home to each student, students presented 10 home-made videos, sharing personal and family “Miracle” stories; and presented 6 homemade Chanukiot that included designs made of fun foods; made with $5 bills; made of Legos; made of magic markers & eraser-flames and one made with tall rolls of paper. Moreh Dov, Cartoonist and Storyteller, shared his Chanukah graphic story, describing the amazing deliberative process of deciding story themes and illustration processes, and the interesting challenges of publishing a Jewish book that highlights the connection between ancient and modern times; Morim Patti Kahn and Dov Smiley
